Overview
This study aimed to determine and assesse the concentrations of trace toxic heavy metals in newspapers printed and unprinted, for estimated environmental contamination and health effects, if the newspapers are reused or recycled. The samples use for study collected from local daily newspapers were political publications during year 2012. For analyzed the samples and determination the heavy metals concentration used atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The metals determined were Pb, Cr, Co, Cd and Cu. In un print newspapers found Pb, Cr, Co and Cd in levels 7.046 ±1.313, 1.26±0.267, 0.070±0.009 and 3.1×105±2.4×10-5 ppm respectively. And in printed newspapers the metals levels were 8.859 ± 0.272, 1.263± 0.267, 0.042±0.082, 3.06×10 5±2.40×10-5 and 40.668±0.409 ppm for Pb, Cr, Co, Cd and Cu respectively. Pb and Cu level were higher than US standard newsprint 2.1 ppm for Pb and 17.2 ppm for Cu, when we calculate the variance levels between printed and unprinted newspapers found an ink printers contained 2.508 ppm of Pb. The Cr and Co level were in range of US standard newsprint. Recycling and returning old newspapers impact in environment with contamination by heavy metals, uses old newspapers for food package is healthy impacts form heavy metals contamination.
