Overview
طرابلس اليوم هي طرابلس الغرب في الفترة الحديثة وهي طرابلس في العهد الحفصي وأطرابلس في العهد الأموي، وهي طرابلس وأطرابلس في العهد الفاطمي والزيري. لقد عرف الطوبونيم رحلة في الشكل والضبط والتهجئة. لقد أثبتت النقود والمصادر العربية والوثائق الرسمية هذه الرحلة وهذا التطور في ضبط الاسم وإقراره. ولئن لم يقبل عموم الناس طيلة الفترة الوسيطة أساسا بقرار السلطة ضبط الاسم الخاص بالمدينة الغربية لتمييزه عن المدينة الشامية، فإنهم في الفترة الحديثة لم يعد لهم خيار إذ كانت السلطة العثمانية أكثر انضباطا وتطبيقا للقانون رغم وجود بعض الإشارات القليلة عن الرغبة في الخوض في هذه المسألة مجددا.
