يسعى هذا البحث إلى الكشف عن معاني العروبة والقومية في شعر خليفة الوقيان، مراعيا التسلسل الزمني، وقد قمت بجمع دواوين الشاعر وترتيبها حسب التسلسل التاريخي، ثم ترتيب قصائدها المتعلقة بالعروبة، مبتدئا بالأقدم فالأحدث وهكذا، شارعا بتحليلها ودراستها واحدة تلو الأخرى، مبينا العلاقات فيما بينها، ومبرزا أهم ملامحها ومدلولاتها، كاشفا عن أبعادها التاريخية والواقعية.
