Overview
بدأ التفكير في إنشاء متحف الفن الإسلامي بالقاهرة منذ نحو 250 عاما، كان ذلك في عهد الخديوي إسماعيل، بدؤوا وقتها بتجميع التحف والآثار الإسلامية النادرة في ركن بساحة مسجد الحاكم بأمر الله وبعد ثلاثين عاما، خصصت له قطعة أرض في ميدان باب الخلق، وأقيم فوقها مبنى المتحف، ومن وقتها والحكومات المصرية المتعاقبة تهتم بترميمه والحفاظ عليه، وتزويده بأجمل التحف والآثار الإسلامية، حتى أصبح يحتل المركز الأول بين المتاحف الإسلامية على مستوى العالم، بما يحتويه من تحف أثرية يصل عددها إلى 4400 تحفة، يتم عرضها بأحدث وسائل العرض، في مبنى ضخم يتسع لأكثر من 25 قاعة عرض، إضافة إلى مكتبة ضخمة بها أكثر من 13000 مرجع علمي عن تطور الحضارة الإسلامية، وما تميزت به فنونها المختلفة.
