تعد دراسة الشخصيات السياسية البارزة من الموضوعات التي حظيت باهتمام الباحثين من أجل الكشف عن أبرز إيجابياتهم وسلبياتهم التي رافقت مسيرة حياتهم، وفي السودان برزت شخصية محمود محمد طه خلال حقبة القرن العشرين من بين الشخصيات التي برزت وتركت بصماتها الواضحة على الفكر السياسي السوداني المعاصر وحاول من خلالها تقديم إضاءة جديدة لتاريخ هذا الفكر، كان له صدى كبير فاق حدود بلاد السودان لما جاء به من أفكار غريبة وجديدة للإسلام خالف فيها جمهور علماء المسلمين وأثارت جدلا واسعا من علماء العالم الإسلامي بين التأييد والمعارضة والرفض وكانت سببا لتقديم حياته لتلك الأفكار.
