تعتبر الأساطير عقيدة تتمثل في شعائر مقدسة من أهم الموروثات التي ورثها الإنسان الجاهلي علاوة على القصص والأمثال والخرافة، وما ألف من ثقافات وما وعي من حضارات فالأسطورة عقيدة تتمثل في شعائر مقدسة يرتبط بها قصص مقدس، يقوم بعملية توضيح هذه الشعائر وربطها بالاعتقاد. والبحث في التفكير الجاهلي يجب أن يبني أساسه لا على التاريخ، بل على الأساطير التي نقلت من جيل إلى جيل.
