إن مقدمة كتاب طبقات فحول الشعراء مقدمة ثرية استطاع من خلالها ابن سلام الوقوف على قضايا نقدية ثقيلة خاصة قضية الانتحال التي لا يزال تأثيرها إلى يومنا هذا، فقد أخذت بعدا واسعا في العصر الحديث مع طه حسين إضافة إلى قضايا أخرى، وقد استعان ابن سلام في معالجته لبعض القضايا بالحجج التي اعتمد عليها في تصنيفه للشعراء، فوضع لذلك الأسس الأولى للنقد الأدبي القديم.
