Overview
This study was aimed To determine and compare the prevalence of different ABO blood groups and Rh factors in five governorates in Yemen. Blood testing for ABO and Rh (D) types was done during the period September 2012 to June 2013, a total of 6350 blood samples were collected from students of the faculty of Arhab- Sana'a University Hospitals, blood banks and primary health centers. ABO and Rh blood grouping were done by agglutination test using finger prick method and direct slide test of blood grouping reagent. The percentage of these groups were 31.03% (A), 13.10% (B), 6.83% (AB), and 49.02% (O). A dominating rate of 85.38 % were Rh positive and 14.61% were Rh negative. Blood group O was predominant 61.9%, 55.4%, 48.0%, and 45.4%, in Taiz, Sana'a city, Ibb, and Sana'a, respectively whereas blood group A was predominant in Sana'a 38.5%, Ibb 32.5%, and Sana'a capital 31.1%. AB blood group was the lowest common in all the governorates, but it was the highest in Al Mahwit with 19%. Rh positive was common to the blood group O 44.03% of all blood groups as compared to blood group AB positive with 5.32%. In conclusion, the frequency of ABO blood groups in five governorates in Yemen was O> A> B> AB, that are a similar to those reported from most areas in the Arabian Gulf region. Rh+ was also different to that reported from neighboring regions.
