Overview
日本の春と言えば、最初に頭に浮かぶ桜は世界各国で植え られているが、この花は日本文化の最も重要なシンボルの一つとして みなされている。桜は古代から現在に至るまで日本の文化や思想と 密接に関係しており、その関係が時代を超えて発展してきたと共に、 桜像とその象徴性も発達してきたといえる。桜が和歌をはじめ物語や 小説などの日本文学の様々な種類に描写されることは当然ではない であろうか。 日本の文学作品を一つ選び、その作品に描写されている桜 像の分析を通して、日本文学における桜像を考察する研究が数多く あるが、これらの研究のうちに、日本の様々な時代を超えて桜像の変 遷の段階を考察する。本研究は、奈良時代(710年~794年)から江 戸時代(1603年~1868年)にかけて日本古典文学に桜像がどのよう に変化してきたのか検討することを目的としている。 それに加えて、開花から散るまでの期間は2週間足らずである 桜は相反する二つの像が共存するさまを象徴しており、それが美しく て明るい像と、憂鬱な像である。本研究は、日本古典文学に描かれ ている桜像の象徴性の特徴とその変遷を明確にすることも目的として いる。
