يشتمل هذا البحث على بيان المعيار النقدي لأبي هلال العسكري في كتاب ديوان المعاني، والكشف عن جملة من الأحكام النقدية التي أطلقها على أشعار العرب، وكان مدار البحث فيه حول \"السرقات الأدبية\" التي ازدادت حدة في عصر أبي هلال العسكري في القرن الرابع الهجري إذ حصل تغيير كبير في المصطلحات الخاصة في السرقة، فقد استعمل العسكري مصطلح \"الأخذ\" بدلا عن مصطلح \"السرقات\" التي شاعت في عصره والعصر الذي قبله.
