كانت حوزة النجف الأشرف حاضرة وساندت الشعب الإيراني، فقد ساند السيد محسن الحكيم والسيد أبو القاسم الخوئي علماء الدين الإيرانيين، في صراعهم مع الحكومة الإيرانية بين عامي (1962- 1963) بعد محاولتها تغيير الدستور الإيراني لعام 1906، فكانت رسائل علماء الدين العراقيين بمثابة الفتاوي التي أربكت الجهاز الحاكم في إيران، حتى بعد نفي السيد الخميني إلى تركيا عام 1964.
