Overview
This study addresses the issue of integration within Islamic association projects in Europe, focusing on the challenges faced by these organizations in balancing religious identity with civic participation. The authors argue that Islamic associations often serve a dual role: they act as spaces for religious and cultural socialization while simultaneously functioning as intermediaries between Muslim communities and the wider society. The paper highlights the diversity of these associations, ranging from those providing social services and educational activities to those engaging in civil and political initiatives. Despite this diversity, they are frequently criticized either for isolation and self-segregation or for instrumentalizing religion for political purposes. Integration is framed as a two-way process that requires Muslims to adapt to European values and laws, while host societies must, in turn, accept religious and cultural pluralism. The study presents several case studies that illustrate how some associations have successfully established cooperative relationships with municipalities and educational institutions, while others have struggled due to lack of transparency or ideological rigidity. The generational divide is also emphasized: younger members often push for greater openness and civic engagement, whereas older leaders tend to favor more traditional modes of organization. The authors conclude that the central challenge lies in finding a balance between preserving Islamic identity and promoting active citizenship. The future of Islamic associations, they argue, depends on their ability to redefine their roles in alignment with democratic and human rights values, making integration not a matter of exclusion but of reciprocal interaction.
