Overview
شهد النصف الثاني من القرن الثامن عشر بروز العديد من فلاسفة التنوير في أوروبا، وذلك لتظافر عدة عوامل ساهمت في تحويل المجتمع الأوربي من عصر استبداد الكنيسة إلى عصر العقل، ويمكن أن نلمس تأثيرا بارزا لبعض المفكرين الذين عاشوا في عصر النهضة الأوربية على تفكير هؤلاء الفلاسفة، إذ تكاملت جهود السابقين مع اللاحقين في مسألة انتصار العقل والوقوف بوجه الملكية المستبدة، وهيمنة الكنيسة، كان فولتير، أحد أبرز المؤثرين في اتجاهات الرأي العام في أوروبا بشكل عام وفرنسا بشكل خاص.
