Overview
This study aims at exploring how a persons' character traits, behaviors, and actions are embodied using the lexeme/'in/ eye' in Sudanese Arabic. It analyses the embodied metaphors and metonyms in the local aphorisms, idioms, and sayings to explain how the Sudanese Arabic speakers conceptualize the different personality aspects. The data of the study was gathered from 45 informants using constructed interviews. The principles of the conceptual metaphor and metonymy analysis and the embodiment theory were used as bases for the analysis of the data of the study. The study results showed that the body part term/ in/ is employed in embodied constructions that were used to present people as being greedy, gluttonous, content, envious, hostile, angry, respectful, disrespectful, have evil intentions, or have inclination for members of the opposite sex. It also showed that/in/ embodied metaphors and metonymies were used to depict a person's mental, cognitive, and critical powers. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the embodied phrasemes were based on the conceptual metaphors and metonymies of the 'eye' as a container, a movable object, a mouth, and the site of respect, as well as that seeing is eating, inflicting harm, touching, knowing, and experiencing. Furthermore, it revealed that some expressions are based on the schema that envy and anger are fire and heat, good is big, and low is bad.
