Overview
The present study examines the language of five electioneering political propaganda by Iraqi parties (2023). It aims to identify the speech acts used in political propaganda and unveil how politicians utilize linguistic devices in spreading their propaganda. As Arabic and English reflect different linguistic and cultural systems, it is hypothesized that implicature is used in political propaganda variously, catchy phrases are frequently observed in political propaganda, and appeal, metaphor, and manipulation are alternatively used in electioneering propaganda. The study reviews the literature about electioneering propaganda along with such pragmatic notions as politeness strategies, the cooperative principle, speech acts, and some rhetorical devices relevant to the study's aims. Five Arabic electioneering political propaganda are selected, translated by two M. A candidate at the Department of Translation/College of Arts/Tikrit University (2023/2024) and analyzed according to Sperber and Wilson's (1986) cognitive-pragmatic model. The conclusions of the analysis confirm the above-mentioned hypotheses.
