الدبلوماسية العسكرية مجال محدد من الدبلوماسية التي تركز في المقام الأول على السعي لتحقيق مصالح السياسة الخارجية للدولة في مجال الأمن، وفي الممارسة الحالية للعلاقات الدولية، فإنها تمثل أحد أهم أشكال أنشطة السياسة الخارجية لمعظم الدول. في نظرية العلاقات الدولية، وخاصة في العلوم الدبلوماسية. لم تحظ الدبلوماسية العسكرية (بالمعنى المحدد أعلاه) إلا باهتمام قليل نسبيا، ويبدو أنها موضوعا قليل التناول؛ إما لكونها مرتبطة بشكل وثيق بالأنشطة الاستخباراتية، أو من المواضيع الدفاعية المتخصصة. مما يؤدي إلى نقص المصادر ذات الصلة التي يمكن على أساسها إجراء بحث متعمق. قد يكون السبب الآخر أيضا هو التفسير المختلف بشكل كبير لمصطلح \"الدبلوماسية العسكرية\" في المصادر العلمية.
