يدرس هذا البحث نشأة ظاهرة التعريف (القعود يوم عرفة بعد العصر) بجامع عمرو بن العاص بفسطاط مصر في ولاية الأمير الأموي عبد العزيز بن مروان (ولي مصر: 65-86 هـ)، أملا في استكناه أصل هذه الظاهرة وملابسات نشأتها إبان أحداث الفتنة الثانية (61-73 هـ)، وتحديدا أثناء الصراع بين عبد الملك بن مروان وعبد الله بن الزبير، والذي انتهى بمقتل عبد الله بن الزبير سنة 73 هـ. فمحور هذا البحث يدور في فلك الإجابة عن السؤال: هل نشأة التعريف في مسجد مصر الجامع (جامع عمرو بن العاص) في إمارة عبد العزيز بن مروان كان تقليدا للتعريف الذي عرفته مساجد البصرة والكوفة من قبل، أم أن الأمر كان له بعد سياسي آخر؟
