Overview
This study aims to collect and identify the medicinal plants of the Asteraceae family in the Al-Khums city and a review on their active compounds using different scientific research databases. The chorological spectrum, and life form of collected and identified plant species were studied and analyzed. The plants were identified using the Flora of Libya series and other taxonomic sources. Data inventory has been documented in the form of family, botanical name, vernacular name, chorological spectrum and life form. Results recorded 31 species, representing 25 genera. The genera with the highest number of species were Atractylis, Centaurea, Conyza, Echinops, Launaea, and Sonchus. These genera are among the largest genera in the family of flora of Libya. The results of the analysis of the life form spectrum of the species based on the Raunkiaer system showed the absolute dominance of Therophytes with 15 (48%) species, followed by Hemicryptophytes with 11 species (35%), Chaemephytes with 4 species(12%) and Geophytes with one species(3%), chorotype spectrum analysis have shown that the dominance of Mediterranean plants followed by Mediterranean/Irano-Turkish. Many medicinal plants growing in the study area have been found to contain many active compounds. These plant-derived compounds can be used in the modification of existing drugs or the design of completely new ones that have a significant role in the management of a variety of human mild and chronic diseases.
