Overview

Colonizers invaded black Africa and spread corruption there, before writing literature that claimed the primitiveness of Africans and forced them to become civilized. Thus, poetry developed and the art of the novel emerged in the twentieth century in denunciation and loyalty to colonialism. However, African literature remains diverse in its types due to its language and region. While African literature is expected to be a denunciation of colonialism, it sometimes supports colonialism in various ways. From these starting points, this study seeks, according to the descriptive analytical method, to shed light on the nature of African literature, on the images of literature loyal to colonialism, novels, and poetry, and the images of literature resistant to colonialism, in the arts of poetry and novels, and local literature, which is considered in itself hostility and revolution against the language of the colonizer. The study shows how literature contributed greatly to restoring consideration for the African person, preserving African identity and culture, and reducing cultural colonialism. The research problem of this paper is crystallized around the presence of Western colonialism, in its two forms: settlement and culture in African literature. The problem contains multiple elements, which can be expanded in the following questions: What is African literature? What is the position of African literature on colonialism? To what extent is this literature loyal to colonialism; and what are its forms? And to what extent is it resistant; and what are its forms? To address these questions the paper includes an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The first chapter deals with a historical overview of African literature, and the second chapter: African literature loyal to colonialism, and includes both poetry and novels, while the third chapter deals with literature resistant to colonialism, and includes poetry and novels together, in addition to local literature. In the conclusion, we discuss the results reached by the study.
