Overview
This research focused on the problems associated with the translation from Arabic into French, in particular the problem of the transfer of figurative expressions, by taking the novel by the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz (passage of miracles: 1947) and its French version, by French translator Antoine Cottin as a starting point for this modest study. The translator encountered several problems, notably, when transferring these figurative meanings from Arabic to French, for many reasons: Sometimes the translator did not understand the intended meaning behind the rhetorical image in the Arabic text, because the two studied languages do not have common denominators. There is also a big linguistic difference between them, which requires a great effort on the part of the translator to understand the meaning, which prompts him to seek creative and positive solutions to do so and to face the challenges and difficulties. We have brought to light many rhetorical images, such as: metaphor, personification, comparison, periphrasis and metonymy, and the knowledge of the mechanism of their transfer from the source language to the target language.
