Problems of ChatGPT in Translating Yemeni Ibbi Dialect into English

Overview
This research investigated the challenges faced by ChatGPT when translating the dialect of Ibb Old City, Yemen, into English. This dialect, characterized by unique phonetics, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and cultural context, presents distinct translation difficulties. The study utilized 25 sentences in Yemeni Ibbi dialect for translation by ChatGPT. Employing a descriptive, analytical, and qualitative approach, the study evaluated ChatGPT's translations using artificial intelligence (AI) translation models and translation theories relevant to dialects. Findings revealed significant issues due to linguistic differences: the Yemeni Ibbi dialect's unique grammatical structures and vocabulary diverge from standard Arabic complicated translation accuracy. Additionally, ChatGPT struggled with phonetic nuances and often mispronounced words or failed to capture subtle intonations. Idiomatic expressions and proverbs were translated literally, losing their figurative meaning and cultural significance. The cultural context embedded in the dialect further challenged ChatGPT, leading to mistranslations and misunderstandings. These issues highlighted the need for improvements in AI translation systems. The study provided recommendations to enhance the translation of AI tools and foster better cross-cultural communication.
