Overview
يعتقد البعض أنه على الرغم من الدور المحوري لـ (السيدة العذراء) في العقيدة والثقافة المسيحية، إلا أن تصويرها في الفن لم يُعرف في الفن المسيحي إلا بعد قرار مجمع إفسوس عام ٤٣١م.، والذي رفع مكانتها رسمياً ومنحها لقب theotokos أي \"أم الإله\". ويتوافق هذا القب مع صورتها \"الأيقونية\" بما ترتديه من ملابس قوامها: الثوب (التونيكtunic ) الطويل وعليه عباءة طويلة تغطى بها رأسها وهي البالا(palla) . تقوم الدراسة على محاولة استجلاء الصورة لملابس السيدة العذراء قبل مجمع إفسوس، ومتى غطت رأسها؟، وذلك من خلال موضوع واحد وهو (البشارة Annunciation)؛ إذ من المفترض أن يكون هذا الموضوع الأول المرتبط بالسيدة العذراء مباشرة.
