Overview
The Sahel area of Africa-which encompasses Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger, and Mauritania-has seen increased foreign action under the pretense of counterterrorism. This region has received global attention because of a series of geopolitical shifts, most notably the 2011 Libyan war and the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime, which contributed to the spread of terrorism and its epicenter shifting from the Middle East and North Africa to the Sahel, Sahara, and West Africa. Terrorist groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda have used the Sahel as a battleground, especially through branches such as Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), the Sahel branch of al-Qaeda, and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). In addition to continuous terrorist strikes that target both military and civilian targets, violent conflicts between these two factions have been occurring since 2020. The Sahel region, which is rich in natural resources such as oil, gas, gold, and minerals, has become a hotbed of international rivalry under the pretext of combating terrorism. This brings up a vital question: Has international-particularly American-intervention succeeded in combating terrorism? This research paper analyzes the political, military, and security components of the United States. This research paper examines the political, military, and security aspects of the United States' participation in the area, providing light on the circumstances that have made the Sahel a focus point for global powers owing to its geostrategic importance. It also looks at American strategies in a region that has become a battleground for conflicting influences from countries like France, the United States, and, more lately, Russia and China. The Sahel has emerged as a critical factor in various Western nations' energy security strategy, notably the United States.
