Overview
This study examines the alignment of Grade 6 mathematics test items-specifically those addressing fractions and number concepts-from the QITABI 2 baseline assessment in Lebanon with the TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) framework. Using item mapping, we align tasks to TIMSS content domains (Whole number properties; Fractions & decimals; Ratio, proportion, and percent) and to TIMSS cognitive domains (Knowing, Applying, Reasoning). Findings indicate strong content coverage across fraction-decimal equivalence, fraction/decimal operations, ratio and proportional reasoning, and basic percent applications. However, the cognitive profile is skewed toward Knowing and Applying, with few tasks eliciting multi-step or non-routine Reasoning. Implications for curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy in Lebanon were discussed, emphasizing the need to elevate cognitive demand and to strengthen conceptual instruction in fractions and proportional reasoning. The paper concludes with actionable recommendations for assessment blueprints, teacher professional learning, and iterative alignment processes to sustain improvement.
