Overview
Handwriting is a foundational cognitive and psychomotor skill, yet its prevalence and quality may be affected by pervasive digital device use. This study examines the relationship between mobile phone overuse and handwriting performance among 40 second-year baccalaureate students at Oued Dahab High School, Oujda, Morocco. Guided by Embodied Cognition and Digital Nativism theories, participants completed a standardized mobile phone use questionnaire and a handwriting assessment. Handwriting was evaluated on legibility, letter formation, line alignment, spacing, and fluency. Pearson correlation analyses revealed a significant negative association between daily mobile phone use and overall handwriting quality (r = -0.58, p < 0.001), indicating that higher screen exposure corresponded with reduced handwriting performance. Gender differences were not statistically significant. These findings suggest that habitual mobile device use may subtly undermine fine-motor and attentional processes critical to handwriting proficiency. Implications for educational practice include balancing digital literacy initiatives with structured handwriting instruction. Future research should explore longitudinal effects, objective measures of digital usage, and intervention strategies to support adolescent psychomotor development.
