أدرك المفكرون والتربويون العرب مند بدء عصر النهضة في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر أهمية التاريخ وحاجة الإنسان إلى دراسته واستلهامه باعتبار إن بناء المجتمع بناء حضاريا أصيلا يتطلب وعيا أصيلا للماضي الحضاري.. وقد برزت في العراق مند تأسيس دولته الحديثة محاولات مهمة اسـتهدفت التخطـيط لتقـديم التاريخ بمنهج علمي ووطني يساعد في تنمية الاتجاه نحو الولاء للوطن وترسـيخ وحدته والبحث هذا يساعد في فهم ذلك الاتجاه.
