Overview
This paper discusses the literary output of Toni Morrison, the contemporary American novelist. She won many prizes including the prestigious Pulitizer in 1988 and the Novel Prize for Literature in 1993. One of the main themes used in her work is that of circularity in relation to the African oral tradition. Repetition or retelling is also used as the refrain of a song. Her novels The Bluest Eye (1970), Sula (1973), Song of Solomon (1977), Tar Baby (1982), Beloved (1987) and Jazz (1992) are seen in the light of these themes. These thematic significances and their narrative approaches are done by analysing the novel's structure through the length of jazz/ music. Hence the author opens new possibilities for herself as well as for the reader. Toni Morrison, a premier contemporary American novelist, chronicles the African-American experience. She is also recognized as the most distinguished African - American novelist since Wright, Ellison, and Baldwin. Morrison has written six novels and a collection of essays and lectures. Her work has won national and international acclaim and has been translated into 14 languages. Her writing has been described as lyrical and she has been applauded for writing prose with the luster of poetry. In her work as an author, Morrison wanted to continue to broaden the perspective of American literature by telling the stories she felt were told, stories about African - American girls and women and the racial and social pressures they faced. She wanted to write about the people with the sensibilities of the cultures she grew up in. She also wanted her work to focus on the joys and sorrows of heir lives. Morrison won the prestigious Pulitizer in 1988 for her novel Beloved (1987) and the coveted Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. She is the first African - American writer to win the Nobel Prize.
