Overview
The modern City of Gaza was not seriously surveyed before the excavations of the last ten years. Three autonomus cities were included in the urban Gaza area: Tell Harubah, the ancient Bronze Age city and capital of the Philistines; Maiumas, the Roman seaport; Blakhiyah -Anthedon, the classical city, Each of them was protected by city walls. The focus of the lecture will be to show three different defence systems of the archaeological site of Blakhiyah, revealed through recent excavations. A huge mudbrick sea rampart protected the Iron Age settlement surounding a small city or a fortress . During the late Hellenistic times, the Gazans developed a high standard of domestic urban life when they adopted Greek models. So they needed new walls to shelter wealth at a time of highest economic prosperity. The Roman time was a period of decline during the rise of the neighbourhood at Maiumas. With the end of Antiquity, the Arab Gaza of Tell Harubah reaped advantage from the desertion of the sea settlements. A new city emerged from the past.
