يناقش هذا المقال مشكلة قديمة حديثة في تاريخ العلوم، ألا وهي مراتب العلوم وكيفيات تصنيفها داخل بنية العقل الغربي والعربي القديم، من خلال فرضيتين أساسيتين، أولاهما تلازم العلوم حصولاً مع الحضارة، وتلازم النهضة وجوداً معها، ثانيها، تقسيم العلوم بحسب مادتها التي تنتمي إليها، فهي إما علوم حضارة، وإما علوم نهضة، وبعد الحفر في الفرضيتين يصل المقال إلى أن العلاقة بين اتصال العلوم وانفصالها دائرة على مراتب العلوم وتقسيماتها التي هي من صناعة العقل المنهجي الذي يريد تقريب العلوم منه، قصد عمران العالم وعمارة الإنسان.
