INCIDENCE OF HEALTH PROBLEMS AMONG DARK ROOM WORKERS IN SOME KHARTOUM STATE HOSPITAL

Overview
Darkroom disease (DD) is a term used to describe an illness affecting radiology workers. It is caused by exposure to X-ray processing chemistry though the bio mechanisms of this allergic-type illness are not well understood. This study aimed to: (i) investigate the incidence of DD among darkroom workers and (ii) discuss persistent issues surrounding dark room diseases and environment. The study was conducted in 16 X ray departments in Khartoum. A data collecting sheet containing symptoms that to be checked in the study was used .A sample of 98 were selected with both gender and with different age groups (16 darkroom technician, 32 radiographic technologist and 50 radiotherapy technologists. The frequently symptoms correlating with time spent in the darkroom ,as well as type of processors, method of ventilation were identified as the following: Headache, Fatigue ,Skin rash Chest pain, Nasal discharge ,Painful joint, Sinus problem, Sore throat, Sore eyes. The study recommended that further investigation was warranted including a review of toxicity information, air ventilation, equipment inspection and maintenance,health monitoring and staff training in order to provide radiographers and technologists with the health-related information to which they are entitled to minimize health risks.
