Overview
The matter of whether or not to use students' first language (L1) in foreign language classes is especially relevant in culturally homogeneous environments such as Yemen where the society is monolingual. English is used in Yemen as a foreign language, mainly for professional purposes .It is taught as a subject. Taking into consideration that L1 (Arabic) plays an important positive role in teaching/learning of English (12), classroom observations showed that L1 is used by teachers and students arbitrary. This position of English in Yemen encouraged us to think of using L1 systematically in English classes. We believe that L1has a necessary and facilitating role in the foreign language classroom. This position seems to be neglected, so that we think it is worthy of serious consideration.
