Overview
This study aims to design and implement a pragmatics-based training program to evaluate its effectiveness in developing English translation skills among students of the English Department at Al-Aqsa University, Palestine. The study posits that translation difficulties stem not only from linguistic deficiencies but also from insufficient awareness of contextual and functional aspects of discourse in both source and target languages. Accordingly, the proposed program trained students to analyze speech acts, implicatures, cultural references, politeness strategies, and idiomatic expressions within authentic communicative contexts. A quasi-experimental design was used, with an experimental group taught through the pragmatics-based program and a control group taught via traditional methods. Multiple assessment instruments were employed, including pre- and post-translation tests and observation checklists to monitor student performance. The findings revealed statistically significant improvements in the experimental group's performance across all translation subskills, particularly in rendering implied meanings, cultural expressions, and contextually complex sentences. The program also enhanced participants' ability to make translation decisions based on pragmatic intent and to consider sociocultural context. The study concludes that integrating pragmatics into translation pedagogy fosters competent translators capable of producing target texts that are functionally and semantically equivalent rather than formally literal. It recommends incorporating pragmatic concepts into university translation curricula and developing similar programs for interpreter training grounded in real-life discourse analysis.
