يستند هذا البحث إلى منجز من منجزات علم الدلالة يتمثل في تقسيم المستويات المقولية إلى ثلاثة، هي المستوى الأعلى والمستوى القاعدي والمستوى الأدنى. ويحاول استثمار ذلك في شعر المتنبي قصد التعرف على كيفية تصرف الشاعر في الرصيد المعجمي الدلالي وتوظيفه لدعم شعرية الصورة وتكثيف الطاقة الجمالية ومن ثم تشعيب النظام التمثيلي بل النص الشعري برمته. فاهتم بأربعة أصول عليا، هي الحيوان والماء والسلاح والخمرة. وتتبع تصرف الشاعر في استعمال ألفاظ مختلفة من المستويين القاعدي والأدنى.
