للوعي الفونولوجي أهمية كبيرة في عملية تعلم القراءة حيث تكاد تجمع جميع الدراسات التي أجريت على مدى السنوات الماضية على أهمية الوعي الفونولوجي في عملية تعلم القراءة بشكل عام، فالطفل الذي يستطيع ملاحظة وتمييز جميع الأصوات التي تتكون منها الكلمة بمعنى الوعي بمحتويات الكلمة من أصوات، فإنه سوف يتعلم ذلك الاقتران الحاصل بين الصوت والحرف المكتوب أو بين الفونيم والغرافيم، وذلك ما أشار إليه بعض الباحثين حيث فحصوا أداء الأطفال في اختبارات الوعي الفونولوجي في مرحلة رياض الأطفال على أنها مؤشر مهم في التحصيل المدرسي المستقبلي وخصوصاً تحصيل القراءة والكتابة.
