Overview
Background: Lower gastrointestinal bleeding is a common indication or hospital admissions, with marked geographic variation in the frequency of different etiologies. Colonoscopy is considered as the diagnostic procedure of choice in evaluation of patients with bleeding per rectum. Methods: a retrospective study of one year period from July 2006 to June 2007, the clinical data of patients admitted with per rectal bleeding were collected including age, sex, site of bleeding, and the underlying cause. In all cases proctoscopy was done, and colonoscopy after preparation and stabilization of the patients. Results: During the one year period of study, 89 patients were admitted with lower gastrointestinal bleeding with mean age of 41 years, the bleeding site was in the perianal in 74% of cases, while the colorectal causes found in 26% of cases. Hemorrhoids were the most common cause of per rectal bleeding. Among the colorectal causes, carcinoma is the most common cause. Conclusion: Bleeding per rectum is a common cause of admission to surgical departments. Hemorrhoids are the most common cause of bleeding per rectum. There is a wide geographic variation regarding the etiologies of lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Colonoscopy is very useful in evaluating patients with bleeding per rectum.
