Overview
This paper analyzes the status of French as a foreign language in the Sudanese linguistic environment concentrating on the last five decades. We trace the historical background of French language presence since its introduction into the Sudanese State in early 1822, passing by the different stages of its development in the specific context until we reach the present situation. The analysis of the current French language status in Sudan, compared to the social real utilization, has shown that this language is getting more and more wide-spread in the country. This can be confirmed also by analyzing vertically the different changes occurred during the long history of French in Sudanese linguistic map. We have also noticed that the French language has become a flourishing field of academic study and a wide-open door for scientific research. The political changes and foreign policies of the country have furthermore given the French language a strong move forward progression and strengthening of language presence. However, the most important detail that should be underlined is the accelerated expansion of French as an academic vector regarding the more intensive French departments at Sudanese universities and private centers inaugurated every year in the country.
