Overview
Gastrointestinal nematode infections in small animals lead to significant impact on the health and welfare of infected animals and to enormous economic damage, the regular and improper use of anthelmintic drugs has led to failure in their effectiveness, knowledge of the mechanism of action of the currently used anthelmintics is essential in order to develop strategies for their sustainable use. To be able to detect anthelmintic resistance, several techniques which differ in their sensitivity are available. In vitro techniques such as Egg hatch Assay (EHA), Larval development assay (LDA), Larval Migration Inhibition Assay (LMIA) and Micromotility Meter (MT) were developed to detect anthelmintic resistance in cattle nematodes. In vivo tests, the controlled test and faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) are the most widely used methods for detection of anthelmintic resistance in field survey.
