Overview
7Tie present study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of Babesia ovis (T.ovis) and Theleria ovis (T.ovis) infection among sheep in the north western area of Libya in different seasons. A total of 450 adult sheep from different localities in the north west area of Libya were subjected to clinical and parasitological examinations for detection of blood parasite infections. The obtained results revealed that, 107 (23.78%) and 47 (10.44%) of sheep were infected with B. ovis and T. ovis respectively. Clinical examination revealed variable signs including pale mucous membranes, fever, anorexia and sometimes enlargement of superficial lymph nodes in some cases, suggesting blood parasite infections. Significant higher prevalence of B. ovis infection among sheep was reported in spring 33 (30%), followed by summer 31(28%), autumn 17(15.5%) and winter 26 (21.67%). While for T. ovis infection there was significant higher prevalence in spring 20 (18%), followed by summer 12 (11%), autumn 5 (4%) and winter 10 (9.9%). Indirect fluorescent antibody technique (IFAT) was used for detection of B. ovis infection where the prevalence of infection was 34.5%, 29% , 27% and 17.5% in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively.
