Overview
The Historia natural, etnografía, geografía, lingüística del Chaco boliviano, by Franciscan missionary Doroteo Giannecchini (1898), is the first published ethnography about the Chiriguano. The writing of the text was product of a peculiar history rich in sorrows and discomforts that took place mainly at the Exposición de Arte Sacra, de las misiones y de las obras católicas (Turín, 1898) and in a Homeric voyage of several Chiriguano «barbarians» to Italy. The paper analyzes severral conspicuous plagiarisms of the text by, and its overdue publication in 1996.
La Historia natural, etnografía, geografía, lingüística del Chaco boliviano del misionero franciscano Doroteo Giannecchini (1898) representa la primera etnografía escrita sobre los chiriguanos. Su redacción fue, sin embargo, fruto de una accidentada historia plagada de sinsabores y molestias, con la «Exposición de arte sacra, de las misiones y de las obras católicas» (Turín, 1898) como principal teatro, y con un homérico viaje de bárbaros chaqueños a Italia como evento más destacado. Continúo con una serie de plagios más o menos descarados por parte de diversos autores, hasta su muy tardía publicación, en 1996.
