Overview
Although the horse was the last of livestock to be domesticated, among all domestic animals it has held the closest link with humans. Horses had to be contained near human shelters and go through extensive training to be useful to humans. Horses are frequently bred or purchased based on color or other physical attributes, yet owners want their horses to have good behavior, which is not directly related to color or physical attributes. Behavior is a result of genetics, role modeling by well-behaved dams and other herd members, and by proper training. The best way to avoid injury from horses is to understand their normal behavior, anticipate their reactions in advance, and make the appropriate adjustments to avoid the situation or deal with it safely. Mules are hybrids of the breeding of horses with donkeys. As a beast of burden, mules have been preferred to horses since ancient times despite the more muscular hindquarters and pulling power of the horse.
