Overview
In addition to dogs and cats, there are other small mammals that are domesticated or tamed and kept as pets or used in research. The natural behavior of small mammals depends on whether they are prey or predator. Determining the gender of small mammals is important to prevent mixing groups that are incompatible. The vision of small prey mammals is good for detecting movements but poor for detail. Most small domestic or tame mammals are nocturnal and unable to tolerate wide ranges of temperature. Special facilities and training are required to safely handle small mammals. The typical small mammal handler should only handle captive-bred, appropriately housed small mammals. Basic sanitary practices should be adhered to, such as keeping hands away from eyes, nose, and mouth when handling small mammals and washing hands after handling the animals. Small mammals should be prevented from any direct or indirect contact with wildlife, particularly wild rodents.
