Overview
This paper intends to reconsider the issue of literature and politics' relationships in XIXth-C France, departing from the traditional perspectives of engagement or disenchantment, where politics is always seen as the «outside» of literature. The study of a «fiction of 1848» —in this case a serial novel written and published between 1848 and 1850— allows to understand how a literary production, in its very materiality, in its specific patterns and forms of publication, could be shaped by the political temporality which was, at the same time, the object of the representation. The paper then approaches the complex issue of the «gens de lettres» rallying to Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte regime, which is often considered by studying writers' explicit political positions and rarely observed in the fictional writing work itself. Precise contextualization of literary activity and writings in the time of their production and publication, by constituing these writing as plain historical objects, can open a new way for a properly political history of literature.
