Consommé sous diverses formes, le quinquina est utilisé par une industrie pharmaceutique qui connaît d’importantes évolutions au cours du XIXe siècle et s’organise entre les officines, où les pharmaciens préparent leurs médicaments, et les fabriques de quinine, qui produisent à grande échelle dans un cadre usinier. Comment s’organise le commerce du quinquina au XIXe siècle entre les zones de production – les républiques andines puis de plus en plus l’Inde et Java – et la France ?
Suivre le circuit qui amène l’écorce vers les lieux de sa transformation, c’est retracer l’organisation du marché d’un produit dont l’enjeu sanitaire suscite des inquiétudes multiples quant à son approvisionnement et aborder l’aspect commercial de l’histoire du médicament : l’évolution de l’offre, la diversité de la demande, les relations entre les opérateurs s’occupant de la récolte et les acheteurs sur les lieux de production, dans les ports d’importation, puis sur les lieux de leur transformation.
Consumed in various forms, cinchona was used by a pharmaceutical industry that underwent significant changes during the 19th century. This industry was organized between pharmacies (where pharmacists prepared their medicines) and quinine factories, which produced on a large scale. How was the Cinchona trade organized between the areas of production – the Andean republics, then increasingly India and Java – and France?
Following the circuit that brought the bark to the places where it was transformed, allows the market organization of a strategic product to be sketched out. It addresses the commercial aspect of the history of drugs: the evolution of the supply, the diversity of the demand, the relations between the operators dealing with the harvest and the buyers in the sites of production, in the ports of importation, and then in the places of their transformation.
