Overview
This critical reflexion discusses the arguments of Gilles Philippe’s Pourquoi le style change-t-il ? (2020), which proposes to study the stylistic transformations in French literary language after 1850 by contrasting the authorial model with the prevalence of collective norms linked with a given « moment ». From examples in Flaubert, the article confronts the reading of this historic stylistics with the differential value of the style of works.
