Overview
Este ensayo ofrece una aproximación a una vertiente del Orientalismo hispanoamericano. Examina la deconstrucción de la turcofobia en la ficción latinoamericana del último tercio del siglo XX. Se centra en dos novelas: Crónica de una muerte anunciada, de Gabriel García Márquez, y La Turca, de Jorge Luis Oviedo, protagonizadas por inmigrantes medio-orientales tildados de \"turcos\" en ambos relatos. Comparada con la obra de los modernistas hispanoamericanos, la deconstrucción abordada aquí resalta un cambio clave en la percepción y representación latinoamericanas vis Ü vis el Otro medio-oriental judeo-árabe. Este cambio refleja la conciencia latinoamericana posmoderna reconocedora y reivindicadora de su pluriculturalidad. Además, refleja una vertiente del Orientalismo hispano e hispanoamericano cuyos objetivos difieren de aquél generalmente cultivado en el resto de Occidente.
