Overview
The post-Federico Borromeo period of Milanese painting is represented in the Valtellina by single works by Gerolamo Chignoli (the altarpiece of the sanctuary in Grosotto, 1632-1633), Francesco Cairo (The Head of the Baptist in Gerola Alta and a lost The Virgin Mary for the church of the Capucins of Sondrio), Luigi Reali (The Marriage of the Virgin in Chiuro, ca. 1650), Agostino Santagostino (altarpiece in San Martino in Serravalle, 1671) and Ercole Procaccini the Younger (canvas for the Oratorio dell'Angelo Custode in Sondrio, ca. 1673). Despite the loss of several works cited in the sources, the works of the Nuvolone brothers in the area (Madonna with Child and St. Felix of Cantalice by Carlo Francesco for the Capucins of Sondrio; canvases and frescoes by Giuseppe for the Collegiata of Chiavenna, 1657) are more continuous. The interesting local painter Giambattista Macolino (ca. 1605 - ca. 1676), who was active in the Como area, Valchiavenna and Graubünden, combined Morazzonian and Nuvolonian influences in a language of lively expressiveness and genuine narrative form in his best works (The Life of St. Andrew in Samolaco, 1631-1632; The Life of St. William of Orange in the sanctuary of the saint in Val San Giacomo, ca. 1650).
