Overview

L'histoire économique de Damas et du Bilād al-Shām à l'époque mamelouke demeure un champ de recherche difficile à explorer du fait de la rareté des documents d'archives disponibles et du caractère épars des informations dans les textes historiques. En prenant comme source principale un passage particulièrement détaillé de la chronique de l'historien al-Jazarɮ- (VIIIe/XIVe siècle), cet article entend non seulement mettre en lumière la richesse et la diversité de la production agricole de Damas mais également contribuer à une meilleure connaissance de l'économie et du système fiscal de la ville et de sa campagne, la Ghūta, à la fin de la période médiévale. The study of the economic history of Bilād al-Shām during the Mamluk period is hampered by a lack of detailed sources. This makes the Syrian historian al-Jazarī's description of the agricultural production of the Damascus and the Ghuta plain in the 14th century CE and the organization of tax collections there all the more interesting. The present paper attempts to examine the variety of agricultural production in the greater Damascus area and to analyze the role of agriculture in its economic system. It does so also by focusing on the close connections between the city of Damascus and its hinterland at the end of the Middle Ages.
