Overview
“Wind jewels” are jade pectorals marked with the Maya sign IK’ for wind. They are typically associated with elite, royal, and ritual contexts and thought to refer to rites controlling wind, rain, and agricultural fertility. In Maya iconography pectorals such as these are pictured around the necks of kings, elites, or deities, but rarely present as artifacts in archaeological assemblages. Two of these unusual objects were excavated from closed contexts in Belize –one from a Terminal Classic elite burial at the site of Nim Li Punit in southern Belize, and a second one from an Early Late Classic nonelite burial located within a household group near the cave of Eduardo Quiroz in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve in western Belize. This article describes the context and excavations of the Eduardo Quiroz wind jewel, discussing its probable relationship to the cave and the implications of the find.
