Overview

A photogrammetric survey of Naachtun Altar 8, an Early Classic monument associated with Stelae 22 and 23, and Structure III in Group C, revealed new iconographic and epigraphic evidence dating back to the origin of the Bat dynasty and to the first recorded rulers by the middle of the 4th century. Formerly recorded as plain, the surface displays in fact a scenic composition pattern typical of early Maya monuments: two individuals flanking a central column of glyphs, probably representing a transmission of power. Both are embedded into a quatrefoil design, indicating an event that occurred in the Underworld. Surprisingly, this late 8th Baktun (8.16.?.?.?) monument shows what seems to be a kaloomte’ title under the left character that, supposedly, portrays the founder of the local dynasty. In this contribution, we explore the implications of these new data for the political history of the city. Un levantamiento por fotogrametría del Altar 8 de Naachtun, un monumento del Clásico temprano asociado con las Estelas 22 y 23, y la Estructura III en el Grupo C, reveló nuevas evidencias iconográficas y epigráficas que remontan a los orígenes de la dinastía de Murciélago y a los primeros gobernantes en la mitad del siglo IV. Considerada inicialmente como lisa, su parte superior presenta ahora una composición escénica típica de los monumentos mayas tempranos con dos individuos enmarcando una columna central de glifos, sugiriendo posiblemente una transmisión de poder. Ambos están insertados en un motivo cuadrifoliado indicando que el evento ocurrió en el Inframundo. Curiosamente, este monumento fechado para la segunda mitad del Baktun 8 (8.16.?.?.?) contiene lo que parece ser el título kaloomte’ por debajo del personaje izquierdo, supuestamente el ancestro/fundador de la dinastía local. En esta contribución, exploramos las implicaciones de estos nuevos datos para la historia política de este centro. Eine photogrammetrische Untersuchung des frühklassischen Altar 8 von Naachtun, der mit den Stelen 22 und 23 und der Struktur III in Gruppe C assoziiert ist, ergab neue ikonographische und epigraphische Hinweise für die Anfänge der so genannten Fledermaus-Dynastie und die ersten schriftlich dokumentierten Herrscher aus der Mitte des 4. Jh. Die Oberfläche des Altars, die früher als unbearbeitet angesehen wurde, zeigt in Wirklichkeit ein für frühe Maya-Monumente typisches szenisches Kompositionsmuster: zwei Personen flankieren eine zentrale Hieroglyphenkolumne. Beide Personen sind in ein Vierpass-Motiv eingebettet, das auf eine Projektion in die Unterwelt hinweist. Überraschenderweise zeigt dieses Monument, welches in die zweite Hälfte des Baktun 8 (8.16.?.?.?) datiert wird, unter dem linken Kopf einen möglichen kaloomte ‘-Titel. Bei der Person handelt es sich vermutlich um den Dynastiegründer. In diesem Beitrag gehen wir der Frage nach, welche Auswirkungen diese neuen Daten auf die politische Geschichte der Stadt haben.
