Overview
My investigations into identity began with an interest in the invention of personal myth by means of gesture, manner and appearances. Inspired by Lacan's writings on the aspects of “mirroring” as a means to re-affirm the self through external appearances, the work explored a number of ideas concerning the image of the body. More than mere portraits, these paintings draw from the non-verbal social language of the body to connect the audience directly to the life- sized scale of the painted figure. Each of the models played a key part in forming and critiquing her image through interactive dialogue. Working from collaged photographs, I altered the points of view to build the presence of the figure through combinations of flat and illusionistic approaches to space and form. The resulting works were an exciting hybrid of figuration and abstraction that revealed the powerful sense of drawing within the painting. within the painting.
